Summer Story About the Bet (True Story)
As it was every year, with my parents, we were at the Croatian sea in Vodice by Šibenik…
It was a hot burning summer day. The sun was at its highest… Other kids my age, I was 6, were not around yet. To kill the time, I was wandering on the beach, by myself, alone, bored out…nothing was really happening…
From the distance I saw a man hitting with an axe on the iron, very thick chain.
In my perception it looked impossible to bite through this chain with this small thin axe. So, I had approached him…
“Excuse me, mister, but I think you won’t be able to cut this thick chain with this small axe…” I said, convinced that I am correct.
He glanced at me with mischievous smile and asked: “Do you bet?”
With full self-confidence my answer was immediate: Yes!
He paused his work and looked at me: “For what?”
“For one Ora!” I said.
Ora is a Slovenian sparkling soft drink, which was very popular at the time.
He agreed and went on with hitting on the chain. Curiously, I was watching him if he was going to succeed or was I correct…?!?
Clearly, he did succeed. And I went to a bar, bought his earned drink and brought him, as promised, his Ora.
The point of the story… Being a kid I kept my word, also if I wouldn’t have to, because I was a child and I could just run away. But I didn’t. Today, I am grown up, but yet I am still the same…
My childhood wisdom did not abandon me today!
“If I say so, then I do so!”
